Las Vegas: Winning the Nature Jackpot
While Las Vegas is one of the most visited city in the U.S., most tourists don’t explore beyond The Strip. But Vegas is more than a modern metropolis. The Grand Canyon is only 3 hours driving distance, and just outside of Downtown is a treasure trove of parks, mountains, lakes, and even snow. Winter sports lovers escape the heat in Mount Charleston.
The following are a few of my recent trips in the great outdoors, enjoy!
Valley of Fire is a Nevada state park, about an hour from the city center. Tour buses go there, or you can rent a car and pay a $10 fee for your vehicle. There’s a visitor center, campsites, hiking trails, and a scenic driveway with spectacular views. Much of Valley of Fire is red sandstone. Geologists date the rock formations back to the dinosaurs.
Elephant Rock is one of the valley’s many formations named after animals.
Throughout Clark County are chances to experience the desert wilderness “the cowboy way.” Las Vegas has a public equestrian center, ranches and guided tours. Even if you’ve never been on a horse, it’s easy enough to learn.
Here I am “riding off into the sunset.” This expression describes the typical happy ending of a Western film.
You may not know of Lake Mead, but you’ve probably heard of Hoover Dam. Historically, the two made it possible for people to begin settling in this town.
Lake Las Vegas is a man-made body of water. It’s much smaller than Mead, but offers several recreation options including a golf course, boating, and water sports. It’s around 45 minutes from The Strip.
During her spring break, my sister and I went kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. We wore plenty of sunscreen, but you’ll especially want to use some in July and August when temperatures exceed 40 degrees centigrade.
Red Rock is another famous outdoor location. I have yet to go to. Though I hear there’s an outdoor amphitheater, which sounds like a lovely place to watch a summer concert!
